English Language - Experienced - Valerie Stevenson
Valerie Stevenson received her BA in English from UCLA and her MA in Educational Leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University.
She has taught English, including AP English Language and AP English Literature, for more than twenty-five years to all grades from 7th to college
freshmen and sophomores. In addition to her work as a classroom teacher at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, California, she has been a team
leader, department chair, resource, and mentor teacher for the San Diego Unified School District.
Valerie has been the recipient of National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants. Her favorite was in 2000, when she studied the poetry of Walt Whitman and Emily
Dickinson at Columbia University and saw NYC’s July 4 Millennium fireworks. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent/ Young Adult English Language Arts.
Valerie has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Preuss School, a charter middle and high school, a UCSD model school to study and develop best
practices in preparation of low-income, urban students for college admissions.
As an endorsed College Board consultant, Valerie is experienced as a reader for the AP English Language exam and a veteran workshop, AP Annual Conference and Summer
Institute presenter.
In addition to her rich professional life, Valerie enjoys two book clubs, a hiking group, gardening, cooking, travel, and her family.
