Duane Swank earned his Ph.D. at Montana State University in chemistry,
physical chemistry concentration, in 1969. After post-doctoral studies at Washington
State University he joined the faculty at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in 1970.
In 1982 he received his MBA degree from PLU. His research focuses on computational
chemistry, NMR studies of aldopyranose molecules, and magnetic properties of transition
metal complexes. During his tenure at PLU he has served as Chemistry Department chair,
dean of Natural Sciences, director of Interdisciplinary Studies, chair of the Environmental
Studies Program and chair of the University's Task Force on Teaching and Learning.
His teaching responsibilities include first year chemistry for science majors, environmental
chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and advanced inorganic chemistry.
He has developed in-house laboratory manuals for first year chemistry, analytical chemistry,
and physical chemistry.
Duane has presented the AP* Chemistry Institute at PLU for 17 years. During the last four
years he has co-taught this Institute with Bill Bond, College Board National Leader and
chemistry teacher at Snohomish High school, Snohomish, Washington and more recently, Duane
has presented AP* Chemistry Workshops in the Western Region as an endorsed consultant for
the College Board*. He has been an AP* chemistry reader for the past eight years. In addition,
he has served as an AP* Chemistry Course Audit Reviewer and a judge for the CLEP Chemistry exam
review. He works with local AP* chemistry teachers and students, providing expertise and resources.
